This research seminar will focus on what are generally termed "events" data.
In this context events are records of actions taken by social actors that
contain some or all of the information in the classic question
"Who does (or says) what to whom, when and how?"
Events thus provide one way to track the behavior of collective social actors
such as governments.
The seminar will cover the how events data has been used in the
political science literature as well as the generation and analysis of
events.
- Students will submit a completed research paper by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, 8 December.
- Papers may be on any topic so long as they use events data to measure one or more key concepts.
- Paper topics must be cleared in advance with the instructor.
- Students will make an oral presentation based on their completed
research paper during weeks 14 and 15 (i.e., 20 & 27 November).
- Students will propose a topic for a research paper no later than the 7th week of class (2 Oct.)
and be prepared to discuss this topic in class in week 8.
- Students will read the material listed on the
course syllabus prior to each week's meeting.
