This research seminar will focus on methods of cross-national comparative
research with a special emphasis on the antecedents and consequences of democracy.
We begin with literature from Political Science and Sociology on the methodology
of cross-national comparative analysis and from Political Science and Economics
on statistical methods appropriate for cross-national data.
We will also devote one seminar meeting to the handling of missing data.
The second part of the seminar examines democracy from a cross-national perspective.
Here we examine indicators of democracy and two substnative areas of cross-national
democracy research: democracy and economic growth and democracy and conflict.
The third part of the seminar beginning immediately after Spring break will
be devoted exclusively to individual projects.
- Students will submit a completed research paper by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2.
Papers must be cross-national in scope.
Papers must include democracy as a key determinant or outcome factor.
Students will make an oral presentation based on their completed
research paper during weeks 14 and 15.
Students will propose a topic for a research paper no later than the 8th week of class
and be prepared to discuss this topic in class in week 9.
Students will read the material listed on the
course syllabus prior to each week's meeting.
